NBA: New York Knicks at Toronto Raptors

A report from Yahoo! Sports has indicated that general manager Bryan Colangelo intends to offer newly acquired small forward Rudy Gay a contract extension this offseason.

Gay, 26, is set to make nearly 18 million dollars next year. He also has a player option for the 2014/15 season worth over 19 million for that year, and if he agrees to an extension this would indicate that he will exercise this option right before the contract is signed.

It would only make sense to extend a player of Gay’s caliber. Locking him up would solidify the small forward slot for a while, and would give the Raptors a consistent scorer for years to come. The Raps likely don’t want him to enter free agency, as this is an area the Raps haven’t really succeeded in throughout the history of the franchise.

However, we can only hope Colangelo will be able to reduce his contract and make him understand the team needs some flexibility to make the moves necessary for that next step. We can only hope.
