JV-PekovicFollowing a disappointing loss to the undermanned Boston Celtics two nights ago, the Atlantic Division-leading Toronto Raptors will attempt to bounce back at home tonight, as they do battle with Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

While the Raptors (19-18) still hold the #3 spot in the Eastern Conference, this game against the Timberwolves (18-20) could end up being an important one. In a long 82 game season, discouraging losses like the one we watched on Wednesday are bound to happen from time to time. It’ll be interesting to see how Toronto bounces back against an opponent that could present challenges, even though they hold a sub-.500 record. Without further ado…

Here are the Cage’s 5 Keys to the Game:

Defensive Rebounding:

In short, the lack of defensive rebounding a couple nights ago played a huge role in putting an end to Toronto’s three game win streak. Jared Sullinger had a career game at the TD Garden, posting 25 points and 20 rebounds (with eight boards coming on the offensive glass). Tonight’s matchup will bring a similar challenge— with Kevin Love and Nikola Pekovic averaging a combined 7.7 offensive rebounds per game. The Toronto Raptors need to limit second-chance points in this one. Amir Johnson and Jonas Valanciunas will probably have their hands full as the Raptors search for their 20th win on the year.

Convert Free Throw Attempts:

Considering the fact that Toronto is a top-10 team in the entire Association when it comes to free throw shooting percentage, Wednesday’s 12 for 25 stinker is more likely to be ‘exception’ than ‘norm’. Converting less than half of the free throw attempts you’ve been given isn’t part of the recipe for victory against any team in this league. Look for the Raptors to be more productive from the charity stripe tonight.

No Love For K-Love:

Kevin Love is a rare talent in this league. A versatile big who can do work inside and out, all while posting monstrous rebounding totals on his stat lines. The Raptors have to do whatever it takes to slow down the UCLA product on offense. I personally wouldn’t be surprised to see Toronto go with a zone defense at some point during this game in order to clog the paint and force K-Love to search for his points elsewhere.

Retreat on Defense:

While we’re talking about Kevin Love’s diverse basketball talents, let’s keep in mind that he’s an excellent outlet passer. His ability to move the ball up the court with a single throw is one of the central reasons why Minnesota is among the league leaders in fast break points per game. Don’t believe me? Check out this video:

In order to limit easy open court layups for the T-Wolves, Toronto’s wing players must make a consistent effort to get back in transition.

Generate Fast Break Opportunities:

Coincidentally enough, while Minnesota excels in scoring on the fast break, they allow tons of points in the same fashion. The Timberwolves rank 27th in points per game allowed on fast breaks and 28th in opponent fast break efficiency. It’s safe to say that the Raptors will be looking for running opportunities of their own in tonight’s matchup.

NBA: Indiana Pacers at Toronto RaptorsX-Factor: Amir Johnson

Amir Johnson will have to bring his hard hat into work tonight, as he’ll be tested against Minnesota’s imposing bigs. Not saying that he’ll have an incredible game from a box score perspective, but his energy and effort on the defensive side of the ball will be a significant factor in the Raptors putting up another game in the win column.
