It’s time again for #NorthernNostalgia: a look back at standout moments and players from Toronto Raptors history.

Raptors fans have put up with years of struggle and false hope. The team’s roster has historically been somewhat of a revolving door, as core players often leave in search of greater success. As a result of this unfortunate cycle, we’ve seen the likes of Milt Palacio and Joey Graham become fixtures for an unnecessary period of time. Among this crowd of distinguished benchwarmers stands Darrick Martin. As a 5’11, 170lb guard out of UCLA, Martin joined the Raps in 2005 after brief stints with the Minnesota TimberwolvesVancouver GrizzliesLos Angeles ClippersSacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks. His years of experience were expected to translate into on-court production and off-court leadership. Throughout his three-year stay with the team, he averaged 2.4 PPG and 7.9 MPG. While these numbers may not exactly stand out, Martin personally engraved one legendary moment into the rock of Raptors history. Longtime fans will remember the team’s monumental streak of 986 consecutive games with at least one made three-pointer, spanning from February 26th 1999 to January 25th 2011 (ironically enough, the streak was stopped as future Raptor Rudy Gay blocked a last-second attempt from one-hit-wonder Sundiata Gaines). This memorable stretch was put into jeopardy on November 29th 2006 in the closing moments of a game versus the Mavericks. As Toronto began to pack its bags after another losing effort, D-Mart nonchalantly threw up a spot-on three to extend the streak. Fans mildly rejoiced while play-by-play announcer Chuck Swirsky naturally went nuts. The original TV footage is nowhere to be found, so enjoy this epic fan-made video:

Yes, that is probably Darrick Martin’s sole career highlight. But it remains a feel-good moment in the hearts of Toronto fans and is definitely worth a revisit. In addition to this cold-blooded shot, Martin left behind a few more hilarious clips that get better with time:

Don’t worry Gene Keady, we’ve all been there before. The sadness in the assistant coach’s face just makes the video.

P.S.: Why is he referred to as “Darrick Murray”?

This one might be a bit over the line, but you’ll probably laugh anyway. Note the “Darrick Murray” error near the end- I feel like this became a recurring joke among Raptor fans.

Martin ended his NBA career with the Raptors and remained with the team as a “behind the bench” coach, further contributing his veteran wisdom and maturity to a struggling franchise. Now at 43 years old, his quiet time up north might have foolishly been overlooked by some, but it will never be forgotten. So here’s to you Darrick- may your legacy in Toronto continue on forever.

That’s it for this week’s installment. Remember to use #NorthernNostalgia on Twitter and Facebook to share YOUR favourite memories from 20 years of Raptors basketball (I’m sure Pops Mensah-Bonsu is waiting for his acknowledgement). Keep it tuned to Raptors Cage for the next edition!
