According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, the Detroit Pistons have offered the expiring contracts of Rodney Stuckey, and Charlie Villanueva to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Rudy Gay.

gay trade

After being acquired by the Toronto Raptors back on January 30th, 2013, the rumor mill has started to churn once again. While the 26-year old Gay (who is owed 17.9million in 2013-2014, and 19.3million in 2014-2015) had shown flashes of brilliance in just roughly half a season with the Toronto Raptors (19.5ppg, 6.4rpg), the possibility of him being dealt could be more ideal than one would imagine.

Although he may seem to be an “untouchable” in the eyes of many, GM Masai Ujiri isn’t considering anyone on the team to even be on that level of scale just yet. With the possibility of having Rudy Gay shipped out of Toronto (for pretty much nothing), it’s almost certain we would be looking at a “tank year” if this is the route the Raps go. And with the consensus number one overall pick in next years’ draft being hometown stud, and local favorite Andrew Wiggins (who has the potential to be the next big thing), it can only serve to be that much more appealing to not only Ujiri, but to us fans as well.

It doesn’t make much sense to deal Gay, a huge asset, for essentially nothing, because even if the Raps do choose the tank path, a better return would definitely be received. If I’m Masai, I’m laughing at this Pistons trade proposal, but if a tank year is in the making, dealing Gay may be a possibility down the road.
