There’s a danger that this year’s NBA season is going to be over in the blink of an eye as a result of the delayed start, the temporary Raptors headquarters and the reduced number of games. Given wider issues in the world, we should probably count our blessings that there is a season at all this year, but it does mean we need to squeeze every ounce of enjoyment out of every Raptors game, even those that don’t quite go to plan.

For many Raptors fans, the obvious way to do that is by getting more deeply involved with a small wager. It doesn’t mean you have to be an expert sports bettor, it is more about having a personal stake in the outcome. It gives you an extra reason to celebrate when the Raptors hang on for a closely fought victory!

Online sportsbooks

The internet, along with Canada’s progressive attitude to gambling, has brought sports betting within easy reach of every Raptors fan. There are countless sites waiting to take your wagers, including providers like Comeon that specifically cater to Canadian customers.

Whichever platform you choose, joining up is easy, and you can instantly deposit some money into your betting account. Some platforms even offer free bonuses to new members, so look out for these types of promotions – but also read the small print, as winnings from “free money” usually need to be re-wagered a set number of times before you can cash anything out.

Placing your bets

The most popular form of NBA bet is the moneyline. This is as simple as it comes. In essence, it just means betting on the Raptors to win against today’s opposition. If things go well, you get paid according to the posted odds at the time you placed your bet.

Another type of bet is the points spread. This is an even-money bet on whether the favourite in an encounter will win by a set number of points. For example, if the Raptors are playing the Nets, they are likely to go in as underdogs, and the bookmaker might set a 5-point spread. If you back the Raptors, you need them to either win or to lose by less than 5 in order to claim your winnings.

A bet that has really started to capture the imagination of Raptors fans and the wider NBA world is the over/under. This originates from soccer betting, and is again an even money bet on whether the total number of points scored by both teams will be above or below a certain figure. In soccer, that figure is typically 2.5, but of course in NBA, it is considerably higher, and usually set at around 220.5 in these high-scoring times. This bet is a useful get-out if the Raptors are facing tough opposition so you are concerned about backing them, but you feel that backing the opposition would be disloyal!

Don’t get too serious

There are pro gamblers out there who make a living from betting on sport. Don’t confuse placing a bet on the Raptors for fun with what those guys do! Keep it fun, and assume whatever you wager is gone, so only bet what you can afford to lose. That way, if you do end up a winner, it’s a bonus that’s really worth celebrating!
