NBA: Philadelphia 76ers at Toronto Raptors

Tonight was the first time this season I got a chance to head down to the Air Canada Center and watch the Toronto Raptors play. I must say, there was certainly a different vibe than what I was used to. The re-branding was in full effect throughout the arena, the stores were revamped, and the fans were buzzing in a game that wasn’t sexy by any means.

The Raptors had some fun tonight as they hosted the lowly Philadelphia 76ers. The Raps showed no mercy as they thrashed the tanking squad by a score of 120-88. The W puts the Raps at an impressive 6-1 to start the season – giving them the sole position at the top of the Eastern conference. Feels good.

This game wasn’t particularly close at any point. The Raps were up by 41 points at one point. All dressed players got a chance to contribute tonight, and it was definitely a good opportunity for the rotational players to log some rest after a relatively heavy past couple of days.

It will be quick, but let’s get to the report card:

Offense: A+

No complaints here. The Raps took care of business offensively against an elite tanking defense. 120 points on 57% shooting, 41% 3 point shooting, and 90% free throw shooting is more than acceptable.

DeMar DeRozan led the charge with 24 points, however after him there was a flurry of solid contributions all around. That’s something definitely great to see. Something to note is that Terrence Ross was stroking again tonight, as he poured in 4 three pointers.

Defense: B+

88 points allowed while forcing the Sixers to 38% shooting is adequate defense by the Raptors. If the effort was 100% for the whole night, the Sixers might not have been able to top 70 points, however it’s understandable that the Raptors eased up at certain points. Solid overall defensive effort, however the lack of talent on the 76ers squad likely was a stronger cause for the result.

Rebounding – A-

This isn’t really worth discussing. The Raptors out-rebounded the Sixers 39-31. Nothing really telling from the box score or in-game play. Let’s move on.

Game Ball: DeMar DeRozan

DeRozan seemed to score at will against the 76ers. He shot 8-12 while making all of his free throws. He also chipped in 6 rebounds, which was great to see. DeRozan and co need to continue to step on the throat of bottom feeding teams such as the Sixers as early as possible. Let’s see it again on Tuesday vs the Orlando Magic.
