The rumor mill keeps on churning as Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors has picked up some steam.

The Memphis Grizzlies are trying to dump Gay in order to not go into the luxury task, and it does seem like a big deal to them. Currently, their team is playing like a championship contender, and moving Gay would be detrimental to their team but save them a lot of money.

The latest has it that the Raps are in talking of sending Jose Calderon and Ed Davis over to Memphis to acquire Gay. Would this make sense for the Raps? A wing rotation of Gay, DeMar DeRozan, and Terrence Ross would be lethal, but you take on a lot of salary, eliminating any flexibility the Raps had and could hurt them in the long run (think re-signing Kyle Lowry).

Losing Ed Davis will also hurt the Raps, as he appears to be taking the next steps required to becoming a starting power forward in this league. This would mean Andrea Bargnani is staying put, and Raptors fans will likely not react too well to that.

Regardless, Gay is an all-star caliber player who would finally give the Raps a legit starting small forward, and most importantly, someone who can close out games. This would really make Raptors basketball a lot more exciting and quite frankly, I would strongly consider this deal.

But if the Raps can deal Bargnani, that’s another story.
