Game #71 of the Toronto Raptors’ season goes down tonight against the Boston Celtics at TD Garden. This is a key divisional matchup, as the Raptors (39-31) currently sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings and cling to first in the Atlantic Division after dropping a heartbreaker to the Cleveland Cavaliers last night. The Celtics (23-47) have yet to be officially eliminated from playoff contention, but their goal for the season is likely to grab a high lottery pick and continue the rebuilding process (sorry for stating the obvious). In other words, Toronto absolutely must win this game- Boston is playing for nothing. After tonight’s game, the two teams will meet again on Friday in Toronto. Let’s jump into the Cage’s Keys to the Game:

Crash those Boards

The Raptors are 15th in the league in rebounds per game (43.1), while their opponent is ranked 14th (43.2). Both teams are evenly matched in this category, so whichever side pulls down more boards will have a definite edge in the game. Look for Amir Johnson to continue his recent pattern of production, and Jonas Valanciunas to battle in the paint against the young big men Jared Sullinger and Brandon Bass.

Control Fouls

Toronto is first in the league in personal fouls per game at 23.1. The Celtics shoot a respectable 77.3% from the free throw line. Put these two statements together and the Raptors’ goal should be clear: avoid unnecessary contact and silly fouls. They will hurt you both in the long run (by costing you the game) and short run (by slowing the game’s momentum).

Come out with Energy

Slow starts and failed comebacks seem to be the Raptors’ favourite game plan. This “strategy” is risky and frustrating to watch. Toronto must put their heart into the game from the opening tip and get into a rhythm right off the bat to avoid falling into a hole. This is a must-win situation and they should treat it as such.

X-Factor: Greivis Vasquez

Vasquez let his his team and the entire fanbase down after choking on the final play of the game last night. While the team will no doubt be in bounce back mode tonight, Vasquez should take it upon himself to claim redemption and win back the trust of Raptors nation. Look for extra production from the backup guard.
